ARTIST STATEMENT
My work emerges from an improvisational way of seeing. I rarely approach the canvas with a plan or predetermined imagery. I love beginning with a blank mind, examining the colors in my basket that speak to me that day. Being a musician, I almost always paint to music. Whether it’s Bill Evans, Hermanos Gutierrez, or Nine Inch Nails, there is a sonic inspiration that mirrors my mood and shapes my creative process.
This process is familiar to me from my musical upbringing in jazz and continues to evolve through my current work in the jam band world, where structure and shape emerge through conversation and responsiveness rather than rigid design. I feel most free in this approach, and painting has always been a place I return to again and again to experience that freedom.
Color is central to my practice. I am fascinated, perhaps even obsessed, by preserving the integrity of each hue, insisting that tones remain vivid and unblended. Through proximity and contrast, colors enter into a conversation that generates energy, movement, and emotion, as forms continuously shapeshift on the canvas, inviting ongoing discovery.
